Facebook Redefines Itself Once Again: New Subscribe Feature

by Sid Bailey

Anyone familiar with Facebook knows that profiles are for friends, pages for the public. But every now and then, Facebook developers like to shake up the interverse with controversial changes. (Remember the Facebook "stalker feed" you used to complain about - before you became addicted to status updates?)

Now, Facebook users can avoid all the hassle of maintaining and updating a separate page by adding the new "Subscribe" feature to their profiles.

Simply log in to your Facebook account and go here. Once you allow subscribers, users who aren't your "friends" can choose to follow your public updates and keep track of what you've been up to. The upper right corner of your public profile will now look like this:

If privacy is a concern, there's no need to worry. Notifications will inform when you have new subscribers, and you can decide who you'll allow to comment on and "like" your posts. In addition, you have the ability to choose which updates are viewable to the public, and which stay in your circle of friends. Use the inline audience selector on your individual posts to determine who can see what you're adding to your wall. Facebook outlines this feature in more detail on their "Privacy Settings" page.
